Billy Gene recently appeared on Steve Sims’ podcast, The Art of Making Things Happen, and he is a genius when it comes to the marketing and advertising world. Gene recognizes that he still has a lot to learn, but we shouldn’t gloss over his achievements. His ads have been viewed over 800 million times and he’s worked with some of the largest companies and franchises in the world.

Gene has also acquired over 110,000 students around the world, and he’s considered one of the pioneers of the Facebook Ads space. When it comes to digital marketing, there are few names as respected as Billy Gene. He had a lot to offer in an incredible conversation.

It All Started with Games

There are some entrepreneurs that have an incredible backstory when it comes to why they entered the tech pace, but Gene is adamant that one simple thing got him interested: video games. He loved playing PC video games, and it suddenly changed the way that he thought about technology, psychology, and entertainment. He began building computers because of how much he enjoyed gaming, and was drawn into the world of the Internet, technology, and the fact that he could interact with people around the world.

He also always loved sales and psychology, and he believes that marketing was a natural fit. To this day, he feels like marketing is a game in which you try to figure out what people are going to do. In fact, he became so obsessed with this concept that he ended up setting a school record for a fake product that he was responsible for selling in a class simulation. To this day, he sums it up as a game where he “looks at data and tries to predict human behavior.”

Early to The Game

These days, there are digital markets popping up out of nowhere. However, Billy Gene was emphasizing the importance of Facebook Ads back when many entrepreneurs were unsure about whether it was smart to invest in social media marketing at all. Gene points out that “competition wasn’t the conversation” back in those days, so he focused on “cracking the code” regarding advertising.

He remembers that it was a game-changing moment for him. What was the big moment? It was simple: making $5 overnight on a video ad. For the first time in his life, Gene began to think about scenarios where he could crack the code and actually make money while he is sleeping. He started thinking about the psychology of sales and hasn’t looked back since.

Inspired by a Director

It’s a very bold decision to literally call yourself the face of marketing, and it’s safe to say that Billy Gene knew what he was doing when he named his company “Billy Gene Is Marketing.” However, it’s interesting to find out that he actually stole the idea from Tyler Perry, who recently made headlines for becoming a billionaire.

Gene noted that when Tyler Perry was first starting out, many of his movie titles began with “Tyler Perry Presents” in an attempt to establish a personal brand. Gene appreciated that move and understood that Perry was teaming up with major movie studios while still making sure that his name was acknowledged and recognized. Gene felt like there was no clear thought leader or industry leader when it came to marketing at the time and decided to insert himself as Billy Gene Is Marketing. He went on to establish himself as the foremost expert and cutting-edge innovator in online marketing.
