Entrepreneurs are the perfect idea men — and women.

We love to spend our days dreaming up new realities. We feel empowered by complex challenges and simple solutions. Yet, for all our ideation and problem-solving prowess, we lack other instincts.

We have one fatal flaw: we can’t get out of the damn way of our own businesses.

That was the topic of our latest conversation on The Art of Making Things Happen with Steve Sims

We sat down with visionary entrepreneur Alex Charfen. For over a decade, he has been helping entrepreneurs create systems and processes in their businesses so that they can spend time doing what they love most: being idea men — and women.

If you feel like you’re spending the bulk of your day lost in a sea of tasks that could be handled easily by others, this podcast was meant for your ears

If You’re Constantly Putting Out Fires, You May Just Be an Arsonist

As most entrepreneurs do, Alex went about solving the problem he had inside his own business.

For years, he felt that the only way to keep his businesses running optimally was to be the center of it. While this is a noble concept, it has one major flaw: how can the business function when you’re not there?

Giving up the 9-5 is a huge calling for many entrepreneurs, then they wake up 5 years later and wonder where their freedom went. It’s the irony of creating a business that centers around you.

Alex learned this the hard way and found a way to have his business and his freedom simultaneously. Now, he helps visionary entrepreneurs do the same thing.

It wasn’t until Alex learned to sit in the passenger seat of his business that he realized that many of the fires he put out in his business were started by himself.

We Teach Entrepreneurs How to Run their Business from the Passenger Seat

Most entrepreneurs put themselves in the driver’s seat when it comes to their business. It’s only natural, but to create momentum and freedom, you must be willing to relinquish some of the control.

That means enjoying your business from the passenger seat.

Think of it this way, you’re still along for the ride — you’re merely giving the directions. These directions are intentional and meant to drive the business forward. As a result, you enjoy all of the same success without half of the headache.

Alex refers to this as intentional involvement

Alex states that most entrepreneurs spend 50-70% of their time just keeping their business running when the right systems and processes could do that for them.

Imagine doubling your productivity while working half as much as you used to in your business — that’s the power of systems and processes.

Four Ways to Delegate and Get Out of the Way

Many entrepreneurs are so busy that they can often miss the telltale signs that they need to get out of the way.

Alex suggests these four areas of delegation which can help you get out of your own way:

  1. Delegate projects – elements of your business that require time
  2. Delegate processes – something you do over and over
  3. Delegate to a policy – recurring issue inside your business
  4. Delegate to people – requesting help to increase productivity

Alex takes it one step further by stating that the more tactical areas of your business you can remove yourself from and delegate to others, the faster your business will grow.
